Vancouver Birth Photographer- Surprise Home Birth
As a Vancouver birth photographer, I have captured many beautiful moments during births, but nothing quite compares to photographing a surprise home birth. I received a call from my doula clients to come to take photos of their birth that was already in progress. The birther was transitioning, and I knew I had to act fast to capture the last hour of their birth.
As a doula and photographer, I always strive to be helpful, fair, and safe. Before I arrived at my client’s home, I made sure to introduce myself in person and ask if there were any specific preferences or concerns they had about the photos and birth. I wanted to make sure they feel comfortable and in control of the situation at all times.
After getting a sense of their preferences, I prepare my camera and doula bag ahead of time so I am ready to document the birth whenever I get the call. The lighting in the room during this home birth was low, but I have mastered low light situations to ensure that I am able to capture the details of the birth. I also made sure to be mindful of their privacy and only capture what they were comfortable with.
As the birther transitioned into the pushing stage, I captured the raw and beautiful moments of birth. The intensity of the experience brought tears to my eyes, and I felt honoured to be able to document such an intimate moment. When the baby was finally born, I captured the first moments of their life, including their first breath and the cutting of the umbilical cord.
After the birth, I stayed for an hour to capture the family's first moments together. The love and joy in the room were contagious, and I made sure to capture every detail. From the tiny fingers and toes of the newborn to the look of awe on the parents' faces, I was able to document the true beauty of birth.
As a doula and photographer, my goal is to provide a safe and supportive space for families during birth. I understand that birth can be a vulnerable and emotional experience, and I strive to be a calm presence in the room. My role is to document the birth in a way that honours the birther's preferences and respects their privacy.
Photographing birth in every shape and form, including home birth is an incredible experience. As a Vancouver birth photographer, I feel honoured to have been able to capture such an intimate moment in this family's life. Through my photos, I hope to inspire other families to embrace the beauty of birth and to see the strength and resilience of those who birth and their families.
